I've just been notified that several of my pieces have won the Kurt Moody Creative Writing Awardscholarship for the 2017-2018 school year! It's very exciting, because I was one of only two recipients! I've wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. I started writing stories when I was in the 5th grade (I still have some of them too!), and have been scribbling away in my journals and notebooks since. But you always wonder if you are any good, especially when no one reads what you write. But this year, I got bold. I heard about some scholarship opportunities and decided to give it a try. One was for creative writing, and of course, I thought to myself, I love to do that!
When I was in high school, I started story called "The Cobbler", but I was never able to finish it. It told myself I lacked experience, and maybe when I was older and had some life experiences under my belt, I could finish it. I had intended it to be a novel, but realized it would make a nice sort story. And less daunting of a task as a short story. So I sat down and finished it. Then I asked one of my awesome professors whom I trust whole heartedly to be brutally honest to review it for me before I submitted it. Once edited and revised, I submitted it, along with a short monologue and two of my poems.
A couple weeks later, I received the notification that my submission had been awarded! You never know until you try what you are capable of, and I am so happy that I decided to take a chance on myself!
